The Therapy Toolkit includes sixty cards devised by an experienced and qualified therapist - each featuring questions and reflections that emulate the process of therapy. Split into four categories - Experiences, Emotions, Relationships and Childhood. The gentle, guiding questions on each card offer a simple first step into therapy. Written by Linn Martinsen, a BACP registered psychotherapeutic counsellor with 18 years' experience in private practice.

A Must-Have

It feels to me that these cards are an accessible information resource for the kind of person who would never study therapy or read an academic textbook. And yet, they have a wealth of information about every major aspect of the therapeutic process as well as explaining the principles behind therapeutic wellbeing. All this is presented as a pack of cards, with a relevant picture on the front and useful text on the back. Martinsen is clearly an experienced and knowledgeable therapist and this shows throughout. In addition, and this is where I think the cards are most useful, they invite reflection on what they are describing. For example, having raised the subject of parenting, Martinsen invites us to consider our own parenting. Not in a simplistic way, but with the sort of nuance that a therapist might bring to the subject. If, as part of this reflection, issues or memories arise of intimacy, love, loss, addiction, anger... then there are other cards in the pack that cover these areas. In this way, it is possible to take a journey through one's own psyche in a useful and illuminating way. If as part of this exploration it starts to become obvious that an issue is problematic or entrenched, that is the point at which one is encouraged to work with a real-life therapist.
